Last week I was running late for class as usual. I suppose it’s because I’ve had senioritis since I was a freshman. In a rush to get out the door, I threw on whatever clothes that matched and hoped I didn’t look a hot mess. Before I hauled out the door, I took my usual last glance in the mirror and I realized that I forgot to put on makeup. Time wasn’t on my side so I cringed, slapped on my moisturizer, and left.
I wouldn’t necessarily consider myself a girly girl, but I will admit that I’ve somewhat fallen victim to the idea that a woman needs a little makeup to face the world. You’ll rarely catch me outside of the house without filled-in brows or a dab of blush on my cheeks. During the times that I am bare-faced, I tend to keep on my huge Mary J. Blige-esque shades.
It’s rather sad that I’ve grown to be this way over the years. As a kid I couldn’t wait to wear makeup. In the 5th grade I shamefully tried to wear lipstick to my first softball game. Whenever I would slather on my cheap NYC plum lipstick, my dad would often say, ”You don’t need that junk on your face!” Back then you couldn’t tell me nothing like Kanye, but now I realize that I really don’t need that junk.
So to kick patriarchy where it hurts, I decided that I would pose a challenge to myself. For one week I will go without makeup. Cue the horror movie screams here. As I type this I’m still slightly afraid, but I’m determined love myself without the Covergirl.
If you’d like to join me for a day, a few days, or the whole week, here’s how you can! Throughout the next seven days, post your fresh-faced selfies on Instagram using the hashtag #PooksRealBeautyChallenge. If you don’t follow me already, click here.
I’ll be sharing your photos and who knows, you may even be featured in one of my posts! Show the world that you’re not the girl who’s afraid to leave the house without makeup. If no one’s ever told you that you’re beautiful without the MAC or L’Oreal, I’m telling you now.
You are beautiful- and never let anyone make you believe otherwise.
So are you brave enough for the challenge? Get to posting those pictures!
